Last nights talk on 570 News after the Rangers game was all about the OHL trade deadline and if people thought that the Kitchener Rangers would do anything before it ended. All the talk was that they wouldn't trade anyone because they have a decent team this year. Also another thing was that the "trading currency" was very expensive. For an average player in the league the aprox. cost was about 8 trade picks which is a lot. The was absolutely no talk on the Rangers trading to get a new player, but as we all know the media has been proven wrong plenty of times. This morning there was news that the Rangers had traded a 3rd round draft pick in 2020 as well as two conditional picks that are both 2nd round picks in 2018 and 2019. The Rangers ended up getting the rights to Robby Fabri from Guelph Storm.
Here is the downside and what I don't get about this trade. In the NHL Fabri plays for St.Louis Blues on their first line. The Rangers aren't going to get Fabri to play for their team this year nor next year. If they were to get him to play next year there is also another downside to the trade. Every OHL team can only have 3 overage players (Age of 20). If they were to take Fabri as one of their overage players that is one less Veteran Ranger the Rangers can choose, and they have 8 overagers as it is. What happens if the Blues call Fabri back up to the NHL? It was a wasted spot that another overager could have taken. Obviously Mike Van Ryn saw some type of benefit to this trade, I just can't figure out what it is.
